Most of you think we close for the season cheering and happy to have the three months of free time. We do cheer (a bit) and we love the free time (okay we do work a bit beyond putting the brown paper in the windows)….but actually closing for the season is sweet and sad at the same time.
Dianne, Elfie & I are the veteran workers and usually close the store together at the end of the day on the 30th. We have a glass of wine and talk about all of YOU.
I have to tell you that during the year, at times, we feel as if we are running a Tavern…we listen to the stories of your lives and you listen to ours.
Our customers come in for coffee and are elated because they have just become grandparents. Customers come in and tell us about their car problems or their family spats. They come in with news of a dear friend that has found out she has breast cancer or a family member has had a fatal accident. You tell us of your hip replacements, knee operations, shoulder and foot repairs…we think you are all bionic by now!
We talk about this job as being heart breaking at times….heart breaking because our hearts feel your pain. Joyful at other times because we are as happy to hear about your daughter’s wedding as you are to tell us.
What I am trying to say is that it is not all about the “sale” when you come in to our door. Of course we want to sell you something, but, we love to see you again. We love it that you come back over and over to shop here.
